Stafford American Legion Post 290

Post 290 Sports Complex

1151 Mountain View Road
Fredericksburg, VA 22406

In the mid 1980s, the officers and members of Post 290 seized the opportunity to ensure growth potential for our Post by procuring the 28 acre parcel of land in the center of Stafford County at 1151 Mountain View Road for the very reasonable price of $58,000.

Past Commanders Mickey Collis and Fred Miller were instrumental in the acquisition and development of the property into what has become the American Legion Post 290 Sports Complex.  It took several years of hard work, but the facility has grown into one of the premier American Legion sports venues in Virginia. The baseball field boasts professionally-sized dimensions of 330’ down the left field line, 340’ down the right field line, and 400’ to the centerfield fence.  There is also a 2 story building which houses our concession stand on the lower level and a media and broadcast booth on the upper floor and a separate building that provides restrooms for both men and women.  The facility also includes 2 lighted softball fields with 300’ fences.

The facility is the home of our American Legion baseball program which includes the Post 290 Nationals and Americans in the Senior Division and the Post 290 Patriots and Virginians in the Junior Division.  Additionally, the Sports Complex serves as the home of our girls’ fastpitch softball program, the Post 290 Bombers, as well as the host for adult softball leagues and travel baseball programs.

The entire facility is managed by Past Commander Fred Miller.  Maintaining the ball fields, grounds, maintenance equipment, etc., along with the snack bar and restrooms, is a full time job.  Fred also oversees the adult summer and fall softball leagues.

In August of 2004, Post 290 began to look into building a new Post Home on the property.  Quite a bit of time and effort was put into this project – Post members were involved in endless meetings with architects, surveyors, County representatives, and building contractors.  On May 21, 2016, Post 290 broke ground on our new Post Home which will be located on the north side of the property adjacent to the ball fields.  We held the Grand Opening of our new Post Home on Saturday, October 7, 2017!
